Screaming Silence

I was reading the printout of the speech given by Cory Doctorow about the ecology of email and DRM and at the Emerging Tech conference, and I realized that I was seeing the after-image of banner ads that have been burned on my retinae from too much reading online. I was having trouble reading the hard-copy because my brain was so used to filtering out the noise of the web. There was no "dancing baloney" on the page around the words. My internet banner ad noise filter was still on. I was used to focusing amidst the din of upsells and the persistence of navigation.

Someday this way will be the ideal medium for consuming text and we will look back at print with a smug nostalgia.
