Philip Johnson: An Apology

Here's my little memory of him: when I was working at 2x4, Michael wanted me to help him design Philip Johnson's newest book of all the most recent projects he had been working on. The man was 92 or something at the time for christ's sake! And boy was he a whippersnapper. He even still had a libido (or perhaps I flatter myself in thinking that he was hitting on me and that he had requested a nice asian boy to work on his book). Anyways, such a cute man, full of stories and sharp as a tack. Michael and I proposed a mutating classical grid, ever so modernist, and Philip seemed to like it, although I admit I dropped the ball a little on the project, as I didn't push hard enough to get all the text from him and his editor. It remains in limbo to this day. I feel sad about that, and about his passing. Sorry I let you down there, Philip. I wish I could have gotten your book out...
